Long List of Reminders by ~DestinyFroste:iconDestinyFroste:

I saw something that reminded me
Of the friendship we once had
And in the rush of mixed emotions
They left me feeling sad

These memories happen quite oft
for the list of them is long
And though I try hard to forget
I must wonder what went wrong

You see, I remember the happiness
And the laughter that we shared
I remember feeling happy
Just knowing that you cared

These memories however wonderful
Lead from one moment to the next
And every path of goodness
Ends with some sad failed test

I trusted in you, I confided in you
And yet you knew me not
For when lines were blurred and the distance great
My soul you had forgot

My thoughts and actions judged
A darkened cloud had grown
From mistaken interpretations
Were harsh conclusions sown

Whether from misunderstanding,
Arrogance, or pride
Something cruel and evil
Tore you from my side

So though I think on fond memories
They put me in a sadden state
To know I will remember the good times
While you will remember the hate

Author's Comments

I will never understand why I am so thoughtful when I take a shower. I honestly "wrote this" while taking a shower just now. The last two lines came to me when I saw a notification on my phone while I was brushing my teeth and then I kept climbing in and out of the shower to record stanzas on my phone. Weird, I know, but whatever works...

The poem itself is sort of a tribute to friendships lost as well as a meditation for me. People tend to make judgments about people, even their closest friends, and if the person is not able to adequately defend themselves, feelings are hurt, and emotions run wild, often destroying close bonds forever. Sometimes a defense is given but not excepted and thrown away as a feeble excuse, other times so much damage has been done by the person making the judgment that the offended does not even wish the attempt a reconciliation if the person was able to think so ill of them.

Either way, the two were once friends. The two may have cried on each others shoulders, spent the night at each others houses, comforted each other when love scorned them, shared the darkest secrets, and who knows what else. In that sense, it is a meditation for me. It is very tempting to think ill of the people who hurt you, especially when you know the truth of their accusations were false, but they were your friend. Though the person may no longer be someone you can be friends with, they once were, and they are friends to others. For whatever reason, they made a mistake, but we are all human, and we all make mistakes. Why worry about the sad times, when you can remember the good times?
